Constantine, Michigan, is the seed corn capital of the world and is located within St. Joseph County. The greater Constantine area produces approximately 10% of the seed corn for the entire United States, with another 10% being produced in the surrounding counties. The city has the largest facilities for giant agricultural corporations, Pioneer, and Monsanto.
A tiny village, only about 2,100 people call this place home, but those who live here are content in knowing they chose a slower, simpler lifestyle while still close enough to more populated areas with more to do. The love of the St. Joseph River brings the town together. Folks can get their kicks, fishing, boating, or canoeing. The river also hosts several boat races and holds other festivals at multiple venues across the county. It’s hard for the people here not to feel a sense of community with their neighbors because the village is less than two square miles.
Originally a part of Potawatomi Native American and related tribal lands, Constantine, and the area around it was ceded to America from the Native peoples as a part of the Treaty of Chicago. The village was originally started where the Fawn River meets the St. Joseph, a patch of land where three European families had settled. It was originally named Meeks Mill after Jonathan Meeks, the creator of the first grain mill. A Yankee from the Northeast, he eventually moved to other frontier lands, having a town named after himself in each place. When naming towns and cities after classical figures became the hip thing to do, the town was renamed after the Roman emperor, Constantine the Great, in 1831. In August of 1869, the largest single span, iron suspension bridge in the west was constructed at a cost of $15,000, and in November of 1869, it collapsed into the river.
For such a small town, Constantine has as many parks as cities much larger than itself. Riverview Park is a local favorite for finding a shady spot to sit near the water with a good book and losing yourself in the story’s world, while South Washington Park has people walking their dogs along the trails or kids on the playgrounds. With many homes less inexpensive than the national average, along with a solid public school system, starting a family here is rather desirable. With the large company facilities and local programs and opportunities, it isn’t difficult to find a job here at many industry levels.
